June Programming Preview: Ready to Launch into Summer!

(All Times Eastern) – I recently had the chance to view the CNN Films documentary Apollo 11 in a theatrical setting. It was spectacular. A visual masterpiece that doesn’t rely on historians to tell the story. Instead, you feel like you are right there with the NASA team, taking part in the historic mission. Now that CNN is going to broadcast the movie, you should find the biggest screen possible to watch it on. It’s a summer blockbuster right in your living room. And for me, this movie, and all the other cable programming coming out in June, signifies that summer has arrived. People still like to tune in to screens of all kinds during these lazy days. So, while major broadcast channels most often premiere shows in the fall, cable takes full advantage of the lack of broadcast programming and is ready to entertain you all summer long. Let’s dive into the best programming options this coming June.

Season Premieres

It’s time for big names and big shows to come back. One of cable’s most watched shows last summer was Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner. Season two on Paramount Network puts us right back in the action. Howie Mandel returns with new episodes of the hit game show Deal or No Deal on CNBC. Critically acclaimed Pose from FX returns with a new story line set at the end of the 80’s. And while the salon ladies turned gangsters from Claws return to TNT, cancer survivor Abby Miller will be clawing her way back to the top of the dance world when Dance Moms returns to Lifetime. These are just some of the shows premiering this month. Click on the links below to learn more about all of the great returning shows.

New Shows of Interest

While the shows above are back because viewers want more, these shows below are hoping to carve out their own niche in the programming world. New scripted series include supernatural thriller NOS4A2 from AMC, dramedy American Princess from Lifetime and seductive and backstabbing Ambitions from OWN. MTV is bringing back the reality program The Hills with original cast members and their kids. The New York Times hopes to share a powerful news story each week with The Weekly on FX. Original Movies

What would summer be without some original movies to escape into? Lifetime presents a new take on a Jane Austen classic in Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta as part of their Book to Screen series. Hallmark Channel’s movies are all a part of their June Weddings event. TV One continues to create biopics of influential black artists with The Bobby DeBarge Story. And CNN will be airing their critically acclaimed look at Apollo 11, which had a brief theatrical release and is based on recently discovered, never before seen footage of the mission, all filmed on 70 mm film. I say you should pop some popcorn and settle in for a great movie.
