Charlie Thurston serves as the President of Comcast Spotlight. He joined Comcast Spotlight in 2002 and is responsible for leading a team of 3,600 employees in local, regional, and national advertising sales that generated approximately $2.3 billion in gross revenue in 2015. Comcast Spotlight is in nearly 80 TV markets, including 20 of the top 25. Comcast Spotlight sells the local advertising slots on 50+ cable networks (ESPN, CNN, CNBC, History Channel, etc), as well as banners/videos on internet sites (including XFINITY.com and others).
Comcast Spotlight built interconnects in 60+ markets, joining over five million affiliated subscribers from Time Warner, Charter, Cox and BrightHouse. Over the past several years, Comcast Spotlight and NCC Media have reached landmark deals with Verizon (for FiOS), AT&T (for U-verse TV) and DIRECTV to represent those companies for local spot advertising sales in a total of 33 Comcast Spotlight markets. Similar deals were previously inked to sell the Regional Sports Network inventory for DIRECTV and DISH Network in multiple markets.
Spotlight is also a pioneer in the new advanced advertising capabilities for television. New products include interactive television (iTV) advertising, dynamic ad insertion in video-on-demand programming and interactive iGuide banners that movie studios/programmers now regularly utilize.
Prior to joining Comcast Spotlight, he was President/CEO of Adlink, the Los Angeles digital interconnect. Hired as Adlink's General Sales Manager in 1989, Charlie was promoted to Vice President of Sales/Marketing in 1991, and then to President/CEO in 1992. Adlink grew from a startup of $750K in revenue in 1988 to $138 million by 2000 and is considered the blueprint for cable interconnects.
His experience spans 32 years in the cable industry. He was General Manager of Continental Cablevision's Cable Advertising Division from 1986-1989. Prior to that, his career included launching advertising sales for Cablevision Systems in New York, Connecticut and Boston. His career began in 1980 selling cable television subscriptions door-to-door.
Originally from Rye, New York, Charlie holds a BA degree from Williams College, 1980, where he also competed in baseball and football. He attended the Haas School of Business's Advanced Management Program at UC Berkeley, and is a member of YPO (Young Presidents Organization).
Charlie was recognized by Inc Magazine as an Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist in “Communications” in 1995, and “Technology” in 1996, and was the recipient of “The Silver Bell” Award from the Ad Council in 2005. He serves on the Board of Directors of NCC Media and the Advertising Council, and he is the former Chairman of the Board for The Cable Advertising Bureau (CAB). Charlie is also an avid participant in SkiTAM, which aids The Olympic Disabled Ski Team. Charlie is married with a son and a daughter.
Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer
Hank Oster holds the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Comcast’s $2.3 billion advertising division. In this role, he oversees the company’s operations; national, regional and local multi-screen sales teams in four regional divisions; corporate data and research; and corporate marketing and communications. In all, Comcast Spotlight reaches more than 35 million households served by Comcast and other cable, satellite and telco service providers.
Upon joining Comcast in 2002, he was tasked with developing the organization’s overall sales strategy and developing the regional operating structure the company currently employs. He also consolidated the company’s advanced advertising, strategic alliances, on-demand publishing and online sales forces to form Comcast Media 360, a business unit created to partner with brands in designing and delivering of media campaigns leveraging addressability, interactivity and data across the full portfolio of Comcast's media assets. In addition, he has worked closely with Comcast leadership to expand Comcast Spotlight’s footprint by forging new affiliate relationships that offer advertisers added reach in key local markets across the country.
Prior to joining Comcast, Hank served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of AdLink. He led the development of AdLink’s sales and marketing, strategic alliances and Hispanic divisions, which enabled advertisers to reach the households of the nation’s #1 Hispanic market.
AdLink became the model for Comcast Spotlight and cable advertising Interconnects around the country.
Hank has more than 30 years of broadcast and cable experience, including his tenure as Vice President of Sales and Programming for Johnson Broadcasting and Vice President/Director of Sales for KHJ-TV (now KCAL) in Los Angeles, California.
He currently sits on the board of directors for National Cable Communications (NCC) and the Cabletelevision Advertising Bureau (CAB).
Senior Vice President, Human Resources
Sandy Gunn is Senior Vice President, Human Resources, for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. He oversees Spotlight’s People strategy, including developing and administering programs and initiatives that attract, grow, engage and retain the right talent to meet the business’ needs now and in the future.
Sandy joined Comcast in February 2008 as Chief People Officer for Comcast Interactive Media. Prior to Comcast Spotlight, he served as Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Comcast Cable, where he was responsible for Comcast Corporate and Cable Headquarters’ HR strategy and was the HR leader for Comcast’s Technology and Product teams.
Sandy has a broad background in talent acquisition, leadership development, compensation & benefits and organizational effectiveness. He has a business-focused, results-driven approach and a successful track record of developing high-performing teams and people at all levels of the organization. Before joining Comcast, Sandy built his HR career by supporting businesses around the world for leading companies such as Vonage, EMI Music, Vivendi Universal and Schlumberger, Ltd.
Sandy graduated from the University of Ottawa, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce and a Bachelor’s degree in Administration.
Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration
Bill Haase serves as Comcast Spotlight's Senior Vice President, Finance & Administration, where he oversees the finance, human resources, and legal functions. He manages all of the financial operations and reporting for the division as well as the administration of human resource practices for the company's employees.
Haase joined Comcast Spotlight in February 2002, serving in various roles for the company's finance organization. He played a critical role in the acquisition and integration processes for a range of businesses, including former Adelphia advertising sales operations, Vehix, Strata, Spot Buy Spot and others. Before joining Comcast Spotlight, Haase previously worked at Ernst & Young LLP in the audit function and later served three years as the Financial Reporting Manager at CDNOW.com, a publicly traded Internet retailer. Haase is a certified public accountant, and graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting and an MBA. He also serves as Treasurer of the Ronald A. Rehling Memorial Fund, a not-for-profit organization that supports leukemia research at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales
Teresa Lucido is Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales, for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, she is responsible for the overall sales strategy in 31 designated market areas including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, DC, Boston and Detroit.
Teresa joined Comcast Spotlight in 2006. In 2011 she was selected to serve as Vice President and General Manager for Spotlight’s Michigan markets until being named Central Division Senior Vice President in 2014. In 2016, Teresa was appointed Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales.
She is a graduate of both the Women in Cable Telecommunication’s (WICT) prestigious Betsy Magness Leadership Institute (BMLI) and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania’s Executive Leadership Program. She was also named by Cablefax as one of the “Most Powerful Women in Cable” in 2015 and 2016. Teresa serves as an executive sponsor of Comcast Spotlight’s Diversity Advisory Council and is a dynamic mentor of young professionals in the organization.
A graduate of Michigan State University with a B.A. in Communication, Teresa has over 30 years of media experience spanning print, agency, radio, TV and online. Prior to joining Comcast Spotlight, she spent 18 years with the Detroit Newspapers where she held several sales and marketing leadership positions, including Vice President of Advertising Sales.
Teresa’s involvement in the community is evidenced by being the recipient of a national philanthropic award for her work with Detroit’s St. John Hospital and Medical Center and her extensive work with the Women & Leadership in the Workplace Conference/Michigan Business and Professional Association. She also serves as a Trustee for CATCH/Sparky Anderson’s Children’s Charity benefitting Children’s and Henry Ford Hospitals.
Teresa and her family reside in the Detroit area.
Senior Vice President, New Business Initiatives
Jon Ozor is Senior Vice President, New Business Initiatives for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, he focuses on Comcast Spotlight’s music strategy which is a new multi-screen opportunity for branding, aligning clients with artists across all genres of music.
Through partnerships with music industry leaders, Comcast Spotlight is opening new advertising channels for clients to effectively target and reach those consumer demographics emotionally connected to music.
Prior to this position, Jon served as Senior Vice President of Comcast Spotlight’s Southern Division where he was responsible for leading sales efforts in Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina and Florida. During his 30 year career in cable, Jon also has worked for MTV Networks, Turner Broadcasting, and MediaOne.
Jon is a graduate of the University of Georgia and resides in Atlanta with his family.
Kevin Patrick Smith
Senior Vice President, Comcast Media 360
Kevin Patrick Smith was named Senior Vice President, Comcast Media 360. Kevin manages six separate teams under the Comcast Media 360 portfolio. This includes Content Partners, Performance Plus, National Sales, Direct Response Sales, Media Intel and Digital Solutions These teams work arm in arm to coordinate cross-company initiatives and showcase Comcast’s full portfolio of assets to marquee marketers who crave addressable, interactive and accountable solutions. His partnerships with the video business unit, NBCUniversal, and Comcast’s Symphony initiative and others have driven significant results for Spotlight.
When he joined Comcast Spotlight in 2007, Kevin initially served as Vice President, Advertising Sales Development, In that role, he drove the creation of incremental revenue by leading the company’s CAPTURE initiative to maximize opportunities in short- and long-form direct-response advertising. He also oversaw the creation of the CARVE centralized remnant inventory management system in concert with Spotlight’s National Fulfillment Center (NFC), designed to capture unrealized revenue across all of Spotlight’s advertising products.
With more than 30 years of experience in the media marketing industry, Kevin formerly was the President of TelAmerica CableConnect, where he was responsible for the management of the CableConnect Network. Prior to TelAmerica, he was Senior Vice President of Cable & PPM Business Development at Arbitron. Previously, Kevin created Mega Advertising, one the first major market interconnects in the U.S., which was a wholly owned subsidiary of Media General, Inc.
Kevin had full scholarships from both the Carroll School of Management at Boston College in 1977 and from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University in 2001. He also was one of the first V.J.s in the U.S., hosting Cable Rock Around , Garden party & Music Entertainment Televisionwhich aired on area cable systems including Comcast.
Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales
Rick Stanley is Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales, for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, he is responsible for the overall sales strategy in 34 designated market areas including San Francisco, Houston, Atlanta, Seattle, Miami and Denver.
Rick began working for Comcast Spotlight in 2002 as the Vice President and General Manager for the Seattle market. In 2005, he assumed the position of Vice President and General Manager for the San Francisco market. In 2006, he transitioned to West Division Senior Vice President. He was appointed Senior Vice President, Advertising Sales in 2016.
Rick joined the company with a strong broadcast background, including over a decade of experience in advertising sales for the Viacom Stations Group. Rick was the Director of Sales at WBBM, a CBS-owned-and-operated television station in Chicago. He also held both General Sales and National Sales management positions at KTXA-TV in Dallas. As Local Sales Manager at WGNT-TV in Norfolk, Va., Rick led the station to increase its local revenue by 39% in 1998—the highest increase among the Paramount Stations Group that year. Prior to working in the television industry, Rick spent six years in financial consulting.
Rick holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Texas at Austin and grew up in Sacramento, CA. Rick and his family reside in the Denver area.
Senior Vice President, Sales
John Tierney serves as Senior Vice President, Sales for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, he is responsible for developing the company’s multi-screen sales strategy to serve national, regional and local advertisers across its footprint.
John most recently served as Senior Vice President, National and Regional Advertising Sales, where he led and delivered outstanding sales results and implemented the company’s sales strategies for automotive, political and tune-in advertising. He joined Comcast Spotlight in 2002 as Vice President of National Advertising Sales.
Prior to joining Comcast, he served as the National Sales Manager for AdLink/Los Angeles and a sales executive at Television Program Enterprises in New York. John also previously served as National Sales Manager at KCAL-TV in Los Angeles and as an Account Executive with Blair TV in New York.
Senior Vice President and General Manager
Roland Trombley serves as Senior Vice President and General Manager for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, he has oversight of the company’s 80 markets throughout nine regions across the country. He works closely with sales leadership to execute on Comcast Spotlight’s enterprise-wide vision and sales strategies.
Prior to his appointment to General Manager, Roland served as the Senior Vice President for Comcast Spotlight’s Central Division. He was responsible for leading sales, marketing, finance, production and traffic operations to drive revenue for 18 designated market areas including Chicago, Boston, Detroit, the Twin Cities and Indianapolis.
Roland has over 30 years of media advertising experience. Prior to his divisional leadership role, Roland was Director of Sales for the Michigan Interconnect, Vice President of Sales for Michigan and Regional Vice President for Michigan.
Before joining Comcast in 2001, he spent 16 years in broadcast in various leadership positions with the Viacom Stations Group, where he launched a station duopoly including WKBD/UPN50 and WWJ CBS 62 in Detroit.
Roland holds degrees in Broadcasting and Marketing from Central Michigan University. He sits on the Board of the Henry Ford Neuroscience Institute and has established a Fellowship for Kidney Cancer Research at the Henry Ford Vattikuti Urology Institute.
Roland resides in Michigan with his wife and two children.
Vice President, Principal Data and Research Strategist
Justin Evans serves as Vice President, Principal Data and Research Strategist for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, Justin’s mission is to enhance Spotlight’s world-class analytics and lead data-driven innovation for the company’s national, regional, and local advertising businesses, for both TV and digital.
Justin has extensive experience in monetizing data in the marketing and media domains and a track record of leading growth at companies focused on data, advertising, and social media. Prior to joining Spotlight in 2015, he was Chief Strategy Officer and Executive Vice President Enterprise for Collective, a venture-backed ad tech company. In this role, he led Collective’s data acquisition and research teams, managed the successful launch of Collective’s mobile display business, and oversaw the growth of its video business to record highs. In addition, Justin launched TV Accelerator, a groundbreaking TV-to-digital targeting capability using set-top-box (STB) data, for which he was granted a patent.
Before Collective, Justin worked at The Nielsen Company in various leadership roles. He was a key member of the team that sold Nielsen (then VNU) to private equity, launched Nielsen’s online ad-targeting business, and created Nielsen’s “Reach, Resonance, Reaction” framework for ad effectiveness measurement. Justin also managed business development for The New York Times’ marketing and advertising group.
A pioneer in the area of data-driven multiscreen advertising, Justin has published research studies, white papers, and has spoken at numerous industry events, including guest lectures at University of Southern California Annenberg’s Media, Economics, and Entrepreneurship program.
Justin earned a Master of Business Administration from New York University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in the City of New York. He lives in Brooklyn with his family.
Vice President, Operations
Travis Parrill is Vice President of Operations for Comcast Spotlight, the Advertising Sales Division of Comcast Cable. In this role, he is responsible for providing holistic oversight and leading long-term strategic planning for the Comcast Spotlight operations team.
Travis guides the enterprise-wide operations and strategic oversight of the Spotlight technical architecture. He also manages Spotlight’s project management office to define business requirements, develop execution plans, and deploy new systems to maximize growth, efficiencies, and profitability. Partnering with Comcast’s Platform Services, which includes thePlatform, STRATA, FreeWheel, Canoe, and Technology Licensing, Travis ensures Spotlight delivers an exceptional experience for clients, partners, and employees.
Since 2011, Travis has led technical, engineering, information systems, and operations teams at Spotlight and Comcast Cable. While with Spotlight, his leadership was instrumental in orchestrating the consolidation of three operations centers to a centralized location in the company’s West Division.
At Comcast Cable, Travis oversaw the engineering efforts for the Mile High region, executed the deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 supporting Comcast’s high speed data initiatives, oversaw and guided the transition to full digital television, and supported numerous back-office transactions/rollouts of channel launches to subscribers.
Prior to joining Comcast, Travis was a Systems Engineer for Corporate Technologies and was a professor at the University of Mary instructing the Computer Information Systems curriculum.
In 2014, Travis was awarded the 40 Under 40 designation from Multichannel News. He also received the Comcast Spotlight National Leadership Going the Extra Mile Award.
Travis earned a Master’s in Business Administration with emphasis in C.I.S, a Bachelor of Applied Science in computer information services, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in business administration from the University of Mary. He resides in Denver, Colorado.
Vice President, Strategic Planning and Communications
Mary Rooney, VP Strategic Planning and Communications, works closely with our executive team to develop programs and processes to help the company achieve its business goals. She and her team focus on project leadership tools to create efficiencies, share best practices and provide uniform business metrics across the company. Mary’s oversight also includes internal and external communications.
Mary, who joined Spotlight in 2002, has demonstrated strong project management through her ability to anticipate, plan and execute on key initiatives including SalesLook, SalesSource, multi-screen and more. Her understanding of our high-level strategy, in conjunction with her energy, passion and business savvy, play vital roles in the evolution of enterprise wide projects.
Over the years, she has spent significant time understanding key stakeholders – including our employees who are closest to our customers - in gaining valuable insights to enhance our ability to execute on priorities. Her credibility is attributed to fostering two-way dialog with our employees, both within Spotlight and Comcast, where she responds quickly with open and honest communication, champions their interests and escalates feedback as appropriate. Her proactive approach to improving the employee experience is grounded by strong relationships across the country.
Mary’s passion for our company, our products, services and, most importantly, our people has made her an invaluable member of our team. As Spotlight continues to launch new products and enhance our stewardship systems, she and her team will work with many of you across the country to operationalize priorities and deliver relevant business communications.
Prior to joining Spotlight, Mary worked for WorldCom’s business-to-business division in various sales, technology and training positions. She holds a B.A. from New York University. She is a graduate of Spotlight’s LEAD and WIL programs as well as WICT’s Rising Leaders and Comcast’s Fundamentals of Leadership programs.
